The population of this region has dwindled since the First World War, with the all too rare inhabitants preserving a memory of the past and wondering about the future. Estoublaisse Valley, a place that artist-photographer Sylvain Gouraud has returned to regularly for a number of years now. A difficult place to reach, possessing not a single building, where the streams and forests run alongside the prairies of Montdenier and the rocks of the Chiran.

A natural space? A wild and empty territory? And yet multiple traces reveal the interactions between human and non-human presences that live there and that contribute, each one on their own level, to shaping the landscape. Starting from encounters with different protagonists of this territory, Sylvain Gouraud collects images and stories that he uses to animate this landscape. By turning certain images around, the artist reveals a set of interactions, breaking with the classic panorama and its single point of view, and questioning the artificial and western frontier that separates men from nature.

On July 28th, 2019 at the end of a group walk in the valley, the artist activated this system in the shade of the lean-to next to the church of Majastres, in a dialogue with the inhabitants. Starting with the revealed images, his speech mixes with that of the users of the valley, bringing to light the complexity of the connections that contribute to shaping the landscape.

Through a back-and-forth movement from the detail to the whole, Sylvain Gouraud questions a specific situation by bringing out issues that link the local to the global. Images become triggers for narratives that generate new configurations, invert perspectives and question practices through which a new space of cohabitation is established.
